Synopsis

Sharpe's Havoc is placed between Sharpe's Rifles and Sharpe's Eagle in the chronological order of the Sharpe Books. Lieutenant Sharpe and his riflemen have just reconnected with the British, after the retreat from Corunna. The new general Arthur Wellesley has not arrived on the scene, and the British and Portuguese are still being driven back by Marshall Soults french army.

Major Hogan orders Lieutenant Richard Sharpe to rescue an english woman Kate Savage from the advancing French army, but is really after Sharpe and his men only hampering the schemes of Colonel Christopher a foreign office agent he does not trust. All he achieves though is marooning Sharpe and his men on the wrong side of the river Douro, with the advancing french army.

Sharpe managers to avoid the disasters at the bridge at Oporto, avoid capture the french army and pick up a part company of French stragglers lead by Lieutenant Jorge Vincent. They manage to track down both Miss Savage and Colonel Christopher and lay low, until betrayed my Colonel Christopher as he sides with the French.

This leaves Sharpe's detachment assaulted until they can break away and rejoin the British army as the new commander Arthur Wellesley seeks to drive Marshall Soult our of Oporto.
