Lt Christian Gibbons
Christian Gibbons is the elder brother of Jane Gibbons, and the nephew of Sir Henry Simmerson the first colonel of the South Essex regiment. He is also close friends with Lt Berry.
He is an adversary to Richard Sharpe and the two fall out immediately after Lt Gibbons mistakes Sharpe for a common soldier and assaults sharpe for not saluting him. This is not helped by Sharpe's jealousy over Christians lover Josefina Lacosta.
The antagonism continues as Gibbons brings the order for Sharpe to advance his skirmishes against French lancers, which is contemptuously ignored by Sharpe and Major Hogan. Sir Arthur Wellsey blocks Christians promotion to captain after the incident and gives it to Sharpe instead.
Things take a turn for the worse after Sharpe rescues Jospehina from Gibbons and Berry after a fight over a unpaid debt game of cards. And Josphina then becomes Sharpe's lover
Gibbons and Berry rape Jospehina in reemerge the night before the battle of Talevera, Sharpe vows to kill Christian then, but he is moved away from Sharpe reach by his uncle in the battle. It is only when Lt Gibbons goes looking for Sharpe that the final conflict between these to happens.
